Goddess Revolution #4 Christmas Traditions

Christmas Time! My favourite time of the year. To be honest, I’m really big on birthdays, anniversaries and holidays. But this time of the year just feels special. Getting together with friends and family, seeing kids get excited, all the food, listening to Christmas carols and of course, all the gift giving and receiving. Our house gets decorated and the tree goes up on the 1st of December, just so that we have a whole month of holiday festivities. And who can forget all the traditions? The ones we grew up with and the ones we created with our own partners and families. So on this lovely day in December we are sharing our favourite Christmas traditions.

Christmas Traditions

Relene Croukamp

I love the whole holiday season. And we have a few traditions that I wouldn’t change for anything. On every Christmas Eve night, after spending the day with family, my husband and I make a Christmas bed in the living room and sleep with the Christmas lights on. On Christmas day we open gifts and spend the day with family again. We also started a new tradition this year. We will be buying one ornament each, to add to our tree. Something that represents us, how we feel that day. Be it fancy, funny or just plain silly. This one I love, because for the last 10 years our tree had a theme, and in years to come, our tree will be full of memories and funny ornaments, each with a story to go with it.

Lizle Van Der Westhuizen

Christmas Holiday in the Van Der Westhuizen house means relax time and appreciate each other’s company. Every second year we would pack up to go down to the coast. This year will be very different.  We will spend our holiday at home and I actually prefer it that way. This will give me time to bake some cookies and treats. Spend some time with my 13-year-old daughter and also do gardening. I usually go on leave from the 13th, so that week I will clear out my cupboards and clothing. Spring clean as we all know it…

I enjoy having my family over for a lunch on Christmas Eve and after eating we will open our gifts. I just enjoy relaxing on Christmas day. Eating everything I shouldn’t eat. Decorating the tree, putting up all the lights and placing the gifts under the tree are something we all get excited about. Our dog and cat also get a gift in the Christmas Stocking, so everyone is looked after.

I just love the Christmas holidays, it is so special to spend this time with your loved ones.

Tiffany Prinsloo

I know it’s not really what Christmas is about but, o my word presents, food, Christmas carols and fairy lights… I LOVE IT!

On Christmas eve my dad puts on his Santa hat and hands out everyone’s gifts, we usually try to stay up as late as possible before we get our gifts, but with age, it gets more difficult. We still manage to make it to 10pm at least…haha!

On Christmas day the whole family gathers back at my parents’ house to stuff our faces with all the delicious food my mom made, afterwards vowing we won’t be eating for the next month we’re so full, only to find ourselves back the next morning for a massive brunch!

Simoney Vosloo

I love Christmas, it is my favourite holiday!

It is a time for family and friends to meet up, and when no excuse is acceptable. We all have a get-together, usually on my dad’s farm having a festive feast and exchanging small gifts between one another. After all the food and gifts, my favourite tradition happens, giving gratitude! We each take a turn to say to the person that is on your left what you grateful for about them. Most of the time we all end up in tears, but they are happy grateful tears. When life happens, we tend to forget to give thanks to each other, and what better way than to do it on Christmas?

Marie’ Venter

Christmas Traditions! On the 1st of December we always put up the Christmas Tree and lights around the house. To get into that Festive Mood you know! Since I moved out – that has become my own tradition as well! Every year my mom decides who gets to decorate the Christmas Tree, Christmas Eve table and then Christmas Day table. With three daughters – that love doing this she had to come up with some kind of plan! WHAT A FEAST we have!!!

Our special day is Christmas Eve, we were never big on giving “big” presents – it’s more about the thought that counts! We “try” and wait for 12 o’clock on the Christmas Eve to open up the presents, but this does not really always work……you know not everyone is that young in my family anymore hehe!! Everyone comes and sit around the Christmas Tree and my Dad will take out the Bible. He always reads out of the book Lukas 2 – This is the part of Jesus Christ birth and he will talk to us about the meaning of Christmas and why we celebrate it. This is a tradition that we always have done and will keep on doing it – something very special to us. After that – PRESENTS!! Whoever has the Christmas hat on is Santa Claus for the evening – that would usually be me and I get to hand out the presents and take photos!

Christmas Day for us is just as special! We have a great feast after church and veg out for the rest of the day with the family! The Christmas time has always been one of my favourites, not just because I am a December Baby 🙂 but because of the meaning of it and the time that I can spend with my family!!

Madelein Ackermann

Christmas Eve we go to the Christmas Eve Church Service and at midnight we open our presents. My favourite part of the day is visiting family, eating way too much and having trifle pudding. A day with the family – even though it’s a lot smaller the last few years – has always been my favourite part of Christmas.

Mieke Botha

Since my family wasn’t much of a huge Christmas family, we never really had a memorable tradition during December. One thing I do remember was that we were allowed to relax to the max. Nobody felt guilty for doing absolutely nothing all day, and we were allowed to have a restoring holiday. My mother would sunbathe and swim all day, and my dad would read and swim all day with snacks. Then we usually made a great roast on Christmas evening and opened our presents. It was almost a “see how lazy you can get” tradition which included great food the whole time. Definitely my type of Christmas.

Jacqueline Bosch

To me, this is the best time of the year. As a kid, I enjoyed decorating the tree, and my sister and I would always fight to put the star on top of the tree. We made a list to our mom and dad for what we wanted for Christmas after we went through the newspaper advert of all the toys.

But now that I’m a mother, I think Christmas is so much more fun than when I was a kid because I get to see my sons’ reactions to Christmas. Getting excited to decorate the tree and writing letters to Santa.

Something sweet that happened last week was that my one of my son’s had Santa come to their pre-school and giving out gifts. His class was scheduled to receive gifts on the Friday. But from Monday to Thursday Santa was going to all the other classes which stressed out my son. On the Thursday my son came home and told us that he hasn’t received a gift yet. He went into the kitchen and got some cookies and milk to put out for Santa. After a while, the cookies and milk were finished. And when I asked my son what happened, he told me that Santa is taking his time and that the milk will become sour so he had to finish it. That night he asked us to pray and ask Jesus to please remind Santa not to forget him. The next day he got his gift from Santa, and when he got home he told us that the prayer worked as Jesus told Santa to bring his gift and he did! I just think this is priceless!

Christmas is about faith and Jesus, and sometimes we forget what we should be thankful for.

I loved reading this. It warmed my heart. As we all know that people spend Christmas with family and friends. But just what special traditions everyone has is not something that gets talked about often. It’s kind of special to have these traditions shared for everyone to read. What is your favourite Christmas Tradition? Share it with us in the comments below…

I hope that everyone has the best Festive Season and remembers to cherish those with whom we get to spend it with.

Merry Christmas!

Goddess Revolution #3 The best advice in life

The best advice you'll ever receive in life

I’m back today with my wonderful friends. Today’s post has me excited on so many levels.

Often in life, we meet people, that either stays in your life for a very long time, or that is a part of your life for only a short period of time. Either way, we learn something from everyone. Be it something life changing or something small. The beauty of it is, we never stop learning. And this is what this post is all about. The best advice you received in life. Read on to feel inspired, just like I did when it read their answers.

Relene Croukamp

The best advice I ever received in life, came from my mother. Despite my sometimes hard exterior, I have such a big heart and always want to see the best in people and believe that they are better than their actions. Needless to say, I have been hurt a lot. One day, while I was still young, my mother told me something that I’ll never forget… When someone shows you who they really are, believe them. So despite having always believed that every person will have my best interest at heart like I had theirs, I started seeing people for who they really are. And that changed my life forever.

Lizle Van Der Westhuizen

The best advice… I can think of many. One that really sits with me until this day would be the one where my mom once told me that you arrive in this world alone and cannot take your worldly possessions with you. I treasure my belongings but never once did I praise them or felt I cannot go without them.

The next story I will tell, I will never forget as long as I live. I still laugh when I think back to that day. I must have been 5 or 6 at the time. I was having a bath and out of the blue, my brother shouts….”You better not take that bath… Jesus can come and take you!!” Obviously, I was frightened out of my wits. But ever since that day, I was more aware of a Higher Power. Thanks Conradt! Hahaha!

Tiffany Prinsloo

Don’t complain about things. You are the only person that can do something about it. If you don’t do anything it will stay the same.- Some advise I got from my loving husband.

Nadine Conradie

The best advice I ever received was actually advice given to me by my mother. She told me to always dress for the position I wanted, and not for the position that I was in. Although it might sound stupid, it is something that I have kept with me throughout my career. My mother also gave me another piece of advice which to this day, is something I think about daily. She told me to always be honest and to always stick to my core values and beliefs. There is a saying, rather hurt me with the truth than comfort me with a lie. I have so much respect for people who are downright honest with me because being honest to someone’s face takes a lot more courage than talking behind their backs.

Sune’ Bissett

The best advice I ever received was “take risks, if you win you’ll be happy if you lose you’ll be wise”. It’s easy to cling to your comfort zones, but being bold and exploring your curiosities is necessary for growth. Every experience – good or bad will shape you in a positive way if you let it.

Jacqueline Bosch

“Never say Never” is the best advice I ever received. Life can be good or life can be bad, but yes what you make of it, that is how it is going to be.

Especially regarding illness – My Grandma had cancer and only after 13 years she got cured of cancer. Just when she got cured, my mom got breast cancer, and my best friend got sick with an illness that is so rare. Regarding bad life situations – My other best friend’s daughter was raped by her own boyfriend, and today she is a beautiful young woman with a little boy, that bless her every day. So what I believe is never say it won’t happen to you. Prepare yourself for all life situations.

And yes it’s sometimes bad, but I’ve believed all the strong people in life gets the bad things, just because God knows that they are strong enough to handle any bad situation and will overcome anything.  And all three ladies in my life have overcome so many things and still going strong today. My grandma sadly passed away, but what good role models are they? I know who I can turn to one day for strength if that one thing does happen to me, which I never thought might have.

Simoney Vosloo

I think the best advice that I ever received is “Kill them with kindness.” Most people that know me, won’t necessarily sum me up as the nice girl. And people who meet me or the first time agrees. All because of my looks. I have a very intimidating look since my school days. And unfortunately, because of people’s perception of me, I built who I am around that. What a mistake! So later in life, I learned that making a scene or being rude because people judge me, got me nowhere. And to kill them with kindness really works! The truth is, being kind does change you for the better. A kind personality makes you so much sexier!

Colleen Van Heerden

I have heard so many stories and little pieces of advice over the years but none really stuck… But one… Never be bothered by the opinions of others unless it will benefit you. And the best advice I have for others… Live every day as if it is your last, spend every minute you have with those you love, make a call to that one person you haven’t seen in months, or years, because tomorrow might be too late.

Marie’ Venter

This is a very difficult question as I have so many different advice for different aspects of my life that I have received in the past but for now I will only give you two.

  1. And this is in Afrikaans: ” Toets alles, maar behou die goeie”

My grandma always used to tell her daughters this and this was also passed on to us through my mom. She always said to us, don’t be afraid of trying new things and doing things that you may be too scared to do. But remember that you do not need to keep on doing it if you don`t like it. So that’s where the phrase comes in ” behou die goeie” .

  1. ” Never say never, and always avoid always” – At first this did not always make sense to me, but after the last couple of years I really started to understand this. There are so many things that I always said I will never do….and truth be told…..most of them I did and I am not regretting any moment of it. It changed my life to start thinking this way. Because never is a very long time to say you won’t do anything or say anything, and always…..well just avoid this as my experience has told me….it can make or break you.

Madelein Ackermann

Hmmmm…the best advise I’ve ever gotten?

We all have gotten the clichés:

“Just be yourself!”

“You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince.”

“Fake it till you make it.”

“Follow your heart….”

So many times you just wanted to tell someone “Oh pleaaaase”…but every now and then someone gives you a little gem that really works for you.

Do what makes you happy.  Just do what is best for you. Sometimes we have to be selfish in order to find true happiness. So when I stopped existing and just started living, I knew it was time to be a little selfish… but that doesn’t mean I will ever stop sharing the love I still have to give. <3

Mieke Botha

When I was a little girl, I used to always complain to my parents when I had nothing to do. I would give a huge sigh and say “I’M BOOOOORED!” and it would echo through the whole house. Being an only child was hard, until that one evening while my parents were watching television, I stomped into the living room just about to shout my next protestation “I’m BO-“, when my dad interrupted me and said, “Mieke, only boring people get bored”. At that time, it didn’t make much sense to me, and I assumed it to be fairly unfair since I had no one to play with.

Until a few months ago, I realized that this was some of the best advice that shaped me into the person I am today. Being bored is a very rare issue that I come to face these days. I can always find a way to entertain myself, especially being stuck in a boring situation. I don’t mind being alone and I don’t need anyone in order to be entertained. There is so much out there to do, so much to read, so many things to feel and see. Yes, it must take a boring and bland person not to see the beauty in less flashy, simple small things.

Wanda Koekemoer

I had to think hard about this one. It isn’t really so much advice as it is a statement or a question. “When is enough enough?” I’ve had to answer this a few times in my adult life.

When is enough enough?

– How much chocolate is enough? 😋

– How much dieting/weight loss is enough?

– How long before you stop believing the lies?

– How long before you get tired of the games?

– How long until you finally decide to move on?

And my latest work-related one:

– When is enough, enough? When do I finally choose my own wellbeing? When I finally snap and it’s too late to turn back time? Or do I decide that I have had enough and ask for help?

So with any conflict you might experience in life, ask yourself: When is enough, enough? Think hard and be truthful in your answer. If you realise it’s that time, make the decision and free yourself. Be brave and move on…whether it be something life-changing or just to put the other half of the chocolate back into the cupboard for another day 😉

GODDESS REVOLUTION #2 BEAUTY SECRETS

We all have a secret or two that we swear by when it comes to our beauty routine. So I gathered my precious friends and asked them the beauty secrets that they live by. And I’m sharing them here with you today. Below is what we all had to say on the subject.

Relene Croukamp

WHAT IS YOUR GO TO BEAUTY TIP?  Since the age of 13, my mom taught me to always, always look after my skin. She got me some facial products and Bio-Oil, and to this day I religiously use skin care products. Bio-Oil is, however, a product that I rarely go without. Having had a lot of operations, and scars to go with it, I have yet to find a product better than this tissue oil. I use it on my face and neck before bed too. I don’t think this is something I will ever stop using.

Lizle Van Der Westhuizen

WHAT IS YOUR GO TO BEAUTY TIP?

Always wash your face before you go to bed. Don’t wear too much makeup as it will make you look older than you really are. Drink a lot of water and don’t touch your face too much. Add some lemon slices to your drinking water and also face wash water and you will reap the benefits of a clear skin.

Tiffany Prinsloo

WHAT IS YOUR GO TO BEAUTY TIP?

Skin: Bio Oil

I have to be careful what I use on my skin, it’s very sensitive and it dries out quickly especially during the winter so twice a week I drizzle a bit in my bathwater (after I washed my hair) and then I just soak in it a bit. I use this on my face as well.

Benefits: It’s good for moisturising your skin and lightens stretch marks or scars. It also leaves your skin with a glow and feeling smooth and soft.

Or I use Nivea Body In-shower Moisturiser. Also, leaves your skin nice and soft and it’s a lot less time-consuming.

Hair: Argan Oil Shampoo

I mix a little Argan Oil Shampoo with my normal Shampoo three times a week, the rest of the time I use my normal shampoo.

Benefits: Cleans, strengthens and moisturises your hair, it smells nice and also leaves it super soft and shining.

Wanda Koekemoer

WHAT IS YOUR GO TO BEAUTY TIP?

Ask anyone that knows me, I don’t wear makeup… except for one time that Relene put some on me for a dress-up party 😋

Thus I’m not really the person anyone would ask for beauty tips. I understand that ladies want to accentuate certain features and I’m sure it makes them feel even more beautiful, but it isn’t for me. I actually like my plain-Jane face that my parents gave me.

As for me, I find enjoyment in colouring my hair funky colours (I try to keep it classy though). It cheers me up in a way that makeup does for others.

Whatever you choose to enhance your beauty with, if it boosts your confidence and makes you feel good – go for it! But please, keep it classy ladies 😉

Sune Bissett

WHAT IS YOUR GO TO BEAUTY TIP? Baby powder. There are just so many things you could do with baby powder. Such as using it for a dry shampoo (preferably if you have light or blonde hair). The powder will absorb excess oil and boost volume. It can increase lash volume, by applying coats of powder between your mascara it adds volume and length to your lashes.

Nadine Conradie

WHAT IS YOUR GO TO BEAUTY TIP? Never sleep with your make-up on. It’s not always nice to go through the 3 step face cleaning routine after a night out with your friends, but I think it’s definitely something that would be worth it in the long run. So suck it up ladies, and wash, tone and moisturize!

Marie’ Venter

WHAT IS YOUR GO TO BEAUTY TIP? For girls with curly hair – this is a tip to save some money as well as to condition your hair. Instead of using a mousse or hairspray, to keep my curls intact and really looking healthy – use conditioner. You apply this when your hair is wet, not too much but just enough so that you cover your entire head. This helps nourish the hair and also makes it shine. It’s easy & affordable and I am so glad that I found out this trick.

Baby Oil! If you are anything like me, you get a nasty rash when you shave. Tried waxing, Veet anything and still, I get the rash. Until someone recently told me to use baby oil to shave your legs with – result: NO MORE RASH and my legs are silky and soft!

Colleen Van Heerden

WHAT IS YOUR GO TO BEAUTY TIP? I’m sure everyone at some point in their life has been lectured by their grandmothers, oh boy and did my granny let it rip!

I do regret not listening, I have been blessed (cursed) with ginger hair and because of that, I have a very light fair skin type. If I just look at the sun I get attacked by the UV rays and then I sit with millions of freckles. My gran could always tell when I went for a swim at my friend’s house or at my cousin’s. And at some point, I was banned from going near a pool.

The story of my life, but I still didn’t listen, so granny found this awesome cream that I was forced to put on my face called “snow white” it was a lovely cream and did seem to work for me, only until I would go back outside in the sun.

Today I regret every minute that I spent in the sun and not listening to my grandmother but I will be sure to teach my kids one day about the good and bad things the sun can do to your skin.

Jacqueline Bosch

WHAT IS YOUR GO TO BEAUTY TIP? Well, my grandma said if you want soft hands, you take sugar and baby oil, mix it into a paste and rub it onto your hands and your hands will be as soft as a baby’s bum… Try it! I have really dry hands and this really works…

There you have it. Some beauty tips that us normal girls live by. Nothing extravagant that you’ll find from a Beauty Guru Youtube channel, but the stuff that really works for us. What are some of your beauty secrets that you live by? Share with us in the comments.

Goddess Revolution #1 Body Confidence

It’s no secret that I battle with body confidence. Having an auto-immune disease, it’s not easy to not feel betrayed by your body. It is something that I’m trying to get over. And I have made a point to remind myself that this body (ill or not) is mine, and will be mine till the day I die. So I want to start loving every part of it. From my boobs and butt to the more hardcore stuff, like all the scars too. Because every scar, big or small, tells a story of what I’ve been through and how far I have come. Loving the parts of you that are considered unconventional or unattractive is undoubtedly an act of rebellion. You are not meant to be perfect. There is something so beautiful about a lady that loves herself. And I’m lucky enough to have said bad-ass girls as my friends who inspire me each and every day. There is beauty in being carefree enough to embrace the same things society told you not to.

So I asked my girls what they loved about their bodies, what gives them confidence and why every woman should embrace her body… Here’s what they had to say.

Lizle Van Der Westhuizen

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR BODY?

I appreciate my back. It’s out of sight most of the time hahaha! Honestly, I would have to admit that I think overall I am not too badly built. I can gain weight fast and also lose the weight just as fast.

WHAT GIVES YOU THAT EXTRA BOOST OF CONFIDENCE?

Looking neat and well dressed. Along with some makeup. Confidence for me means going into a room and just being myself. Good looking hair and a smile goes a long way along with inner strength to say how you feel no matter who or what you need to face.

WHY SHOULD MORE WOMEN LOVE THE BODIES THEY ARE IN?

Loving yourself first means you are able to love others and accept all their mistakes. Hating your body can be a temporary thing. All women of all sizes have the ability to change their appearance, the only thing that really needs to be changed is the mind and will power. Starting a diet without willpower is bound to fail and this statement goes parallel with all addictions and difficulties that women have to deal with. It’s harder to judge another person once you place yourself in their shoes.

Tiffany Prinsloo

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR BODY, AND WHY?

Definitely my eyes and hair. I’m lucky I have really big eyes and long lashes and my hair does what I want it to do. Blessed.

WHAT GIVES YOU THAT EXTRA BOOST OF CONFIDENCE?

Music. Listening to powerful women like Beyonce or Fergie some of their music make me feel fierce… haha!

Gym. Walking out the gym after just killing a workout, lifts my spirit instantly.

WHY SHOULD MORE WOMEN LOVE THE BODIES THEY ARE IN?

It’s the only one you have, you can’t swop it or trade it, you have to learn to love who you are and be comfortable in your own skin. How boring would the world be if we were all the same…

Tanya McGeer

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR BODY, AND WHY?

This is quite a difficult question to answer. I think there are some women, like myself, who find it difficult to say what they like, or in this case, love about their bodies. The one thing I do like about myself is my hair. I have curly hair so I can do whatever I like with it. If I want to make a messy bun – yay, if I want to braid it – why not, if I want to straighten it – go right ahead. My hair is very loyal! It will never let me down!

WHAT GIVES YOU THAT EXTRA BOOST OF CONFIDENCE?

The different types of clothes that I wear. I’m not much of a makeup lover, but if I feel good about what I have on that day it boosts my confidence quite a lot!

WHY SHOULD MORE WOMEN LOVE THE BODIES THEY ARE IN?

The thing is, women are made to believe that they are not allowed to say: “I am beautiful”, otherwise you are seen as vain or self-absorbed. Society has made us believe to only see the negative things about our bodies and personalities, in general. It’s a difficult thing to tell somebody to love the body that they are in because I think everyone, male or female, has something that they wish to change about themselves. The important thing is: one should feel comfortable in the body that one is born in. That is quite a tall order. But, to be comfortable in your body – to love your body, you should accept the person you are with all of its flaws and imperfections. Only then will you be truly happy!

Wanda Koekemoer

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR BODY, AND WHY?

I love the fact that I’ve made peace with it. Having to walk naked past a mirror every day for a month seems to soften the eyes. Now I just do maintenance for my old age, bit of pilates here, bit of mountain biking there …(some sushi..Ed’s diner burgers….pizza….*thought bubble*)

WHAT GIVES YOU THAT EXTRA BOOST OF CONFIDENCE?

I have a big bear that constantly tells me I’m beautiful, or that the outfit I chose/ hairdo looks good on me. (Lack of confidence makes me stare at him in disbelief, but I’m happy that he feels that way about me. It’s slowly building my confidence)

WHY SHOULD MORE WOMEN LOVE THE BODIES THEY ARE IN?

Because..who cares, everyone is different. Everyone has something unique to them. There is more to you than your body..unless you’re a skinny model (I’m stereotyping..sorry :P). As long as you have people in your life that compliment and support you (each other), who cares what the rest of the world thinks. They probably have lots of things hidden in their closets which they should rather deal with instead of wasting their time gossiping about other people’s bodies.

Sune Bissett

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR BODY, AND WHY?

My lips. Like many young women, I’ve struggled with body confidence issues, so I decided to focus on my stronger features instead.I love the shape of my lips.

WHAT GIVES YOU THAT EXTRA BOOST OF CONFIDENCE?

The amazing women in my life. We support each other in many ways, especially when we need reminders that we are not as simple as our reflection or the number on the scale. It’s easier said than done, but the love and support of a dear friend do wonders. I also love dressing up wearing lots of perfume and lipstick. It’s just something that makes me feel good

WHY SHOULD MORE WOMEN LOVE THE BODIES THEY ARE IN?

I am almost 24 and the struggle continues. Often I have to remind myself that being happy and healthy is the only thing that matters. I am not 100% there yet, but I plan to be. Constantly comparing yourself to supermodels and hating your body is very exhausting. Learn to love your body and set the example for others.

“Let me ask you something, in all the years that you have…undressed in front of a gentleman has he ever asked you to leave? Has he ever walked out and left? No? It’s because he doesn’t care! He’s in a room with a naked girl, he just won the lottery. I am so tired of saying no, waking up in the morning and recalling every single thing I ate the day before, counting every calorie I consumed so I know just how much self-loathing to take into the shower. I’m going for it. I have no interest in being obese, I’m just through with the guilt. So this is what I’m going to do, I’m going to finish this pizza, and then we are going to go watch the soccer game, and tomorrow we are going to go on a little date and buy ourselves some bigger jeans.” –Elizabeth Gilbert – Eat, Pray, Love

Madelein Ackermann

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR BODY, AND WHY?

To be honest, I’m not quite sure. I’ve always struggled with body confidence too! Being the “chubby” friend means you’re always wishing you were prettier and skinnier…like all your hot skinny friends…

But it’s my body, no one else’s. It’s healthy and everything works as it should…except my brain…sometimes it takes weird twists and turns. I’ve got pretty green eyes and always get complimented on them.

WHAT GIVES YOU THAT EXTRA BOOST OF CONFIDENCE?

Feeling pretty…wearing a new scarf, my favourite perfume or trying a new hairstyle.

WHY SHOULD MORE WOMEN LOVE THE BODIES THEY ARE IN?

Work with what you’ve got, we can’t trade in our bodies for a newer model. We are wonderfully and fearfully made, believe it!

Nadine Conradie

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR BODY, AND WHY?

The thing I love most about my body would most definitely have to be my cesarean scar. After a routine checkup with my gynecologist in December 2015 I was informed that I have high severity abnormal cells. Being a healthy 28 year old this was not something that I was expecting at all. In January 2016 I had to undergo an operation where they were going to remove the abnormal cells, however, after the operation, the gynecologist informed me that she was unable to remove all the cells. As if that wasn’t enough, I was told that if the abnormal cells are still there by December 2016 they would need to do a full hysterectomy as the abnormal cells would turn into cancer. This meant, if I ever wanted kids, I had to do it now. Even though I was not married, I was in a loving relationship with someone who wanted kids just as much as I did and we didn’t even think twice. We knew that we were racing against time and immediately started trying. After about a month our prayers were answered when I learned that I was pregnant. I got a lot of flack from a lot of people as I was not married, but to this day, I will do it all again. I have been blessed with a beautiful baby boy, and no matter how many scars, stretch marks and extra weight I gained, I would do it all again in a heartbeat. The scar that I have that most people would consider hideous or disgusting is a constant reminder of everything that has happened and how God has blessed me beyond measure.

WHAT GIVES YOU THAT EXTRA BOOST OF CONFIDENCE?

Hearing the man of my dreams tell me that I look beautiful while I am sitting on the couch with my hair in a bun and no makeup really makes me feel good. I have to admit that a nice pair of stiletto’s also does the trick. No matter how bad my day is going, if I put on a pair of high heels I immediately feel prettier, more powerful and ready to take on whatever life throws at me.

WHY SHOULD MORE WOMEN LOVE THE BODIES THEY ARE IN?

Social media paints this picture of what we should look like to be beautiful but I call bullshit. If we take a second, and turn to the important people in our lives we will see that we are perfect the way we are. I have spent thousands on extensions, beauty procedures, makeup and skin care and all types of stuff seen on social media as I also wanted to be considered beautiful, when all along, my significant other considered me beautiful without any of those things. Women come in all different shapes and sizes and in my eyes, any women, no matter her race, age, weight or height is beautiful. We just need to learn to embrace who we are.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR BODY, AND WHY?

My eyes most definitely.

They have always been the part of me that helped me cope with being an extremely self-conscious person, due to having rosacea. Making eye contact and holding my head up in public was always a thing that I had to pay extra special attention to, especially when listening to people or friends otherwise I would come across as rude or uninterested. I hated people coming close to me or invading my personal space because that meant that they could see my face more clearly. But… After realizing that no matter with what skin dilemma I wake up with, I do have beautiful eyes, and it really helped me cope with being more confident and sociable, knowing that there still is something to brighten up my face. They are a daily reminder to me, that even though we don’t always feel beautiful, it is our inner beauty which will still shine through. After all, the eyes are the windows to the soul.

WHAT GIVES YOU THAT EXTRA BOOST OF CONFIDENCE?

A thing that has always given me that extra boost is feeling extremely fresh and wearing perfume. I have always admired people with clean hair and nails, good breath, and smells great. Therefore it always makes me feel comfortable and confident when I just had my nails done, my hair is looking healthy and shiny, and I’m wearing my favorite perfume (DKNY).

WHY SHOULD MORE WOMEN LOVE THE BODIES THEY ARE IN?

I know that a lot of people say this on a daily basis, but I believe that more women should be comfortable in their own skin and bodies because it has become such a challenge especially in today’s time with advertisement and the internet. It is such a great motivator and example for me when I see a woman being completely comfortable with all her imperfections. She could be overweight, underweight, she might have terrible acne or no hair. It’s as if in that moment when they aren’t aware of themselves or overly focused on their flaws, other people also pay less attention to her flaws and what she’s actually saying. It is much easier said than done, but I learned through experience that faking it till you make it is something that can help you learn to feel more comfortable after realizing that it’s not so bad to be your vulnerable self and that other people aren’t as judgemental and terrible as we are towards ourselves. You will also immediately see a difference in how others start to treat you, not only because you look prettier, but also when you become more vulnerable and comfortable with yourself, others automatically start to become more comfortable around you as well. I am always so thankful to see other women being comfortable in their bodies, despite their flaws, because it shows me that I can also look beautiful without feeling the need to cover everything up.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR BODY, AND WHY?

Well if you see me, you will think I’m a perfect number… but yes like every girl, there is always something I find wrong with my body… Well, that is what every girl really thinks… But not every man thinks that.  Even if my body is so skinny and looks pretty… it’s not always the coolest thing because when you start buying close and you release that you (at the age of 30) still need to buy clothes from the kiddies section at department stores, it’s kind of depressing…. well the question is still what I love about my body… I must say it must be my stomach and my hair… Mostly my hair… I can change the colour and whatever colour I change it to I still look pretty… for myself.

WHAT GIVES YOU THAT EXTRA BOOST OF CONFIDENCE?

When someone gives you a compliment, that’s when I get that extra boost of confidence… a positive word is always good for your soul.
